You can greatly improve the health and vigor of newly planted trees and shrubs by applying mulch right after the planting.

 Why mulch?

  1. Improves aesthetic appearance
  2. Creates a safe zone around trees to prevent damage from mowers and string trimmers
  3. Provides soil moisture conservation
  4. Moderates soil temperature variations
  5. Suppresses weedsMulch Volcano-- Avoid piling mulch to high or too close to the tree trunk.
  6. Increases organic matter in the soil
  7. Improves soil microbial activity

How to mulch

  1. Apply 2-3 inches of mulch.  Remember, more is not better.
  2. It is important to keep a six-inch no mulch zone around the tree's base.

Don't pile mulch too high and do not pile it so it is touching the base of trees. This creates the dreaded mulch volcano, as pictured in the photo at the right.
